BC Grown, Indoor, Hydro, Greenhouse and Outdoor: Different Labels, Different Meanings
BC grown describes origin; indoor, outdoor and greenhouse describe environments; hydroponic describes a growing method. Learn the difference.
Cannabis growing terms are easy to mix together because they sound like competing quality categories.
They are not always describing the same thing.
“BC grown” is about where cannabis was grown.
“Indoor,” “outdoor” and “greenhouse” describe growing environments.
“Hydroponic” describes a cultivation method.
A single cannabis crop can fit more than one of those descriptions at the same time.
BC Grown Is About Origin
BC-grown cannabis means cannabis grown in British Columbia.
It does not, by itself, tell you:
whether the crop was grown indoors or outdoors;
whether it used hydroponics or another growing medium;
whether it was grown at small or large scale;
whether the final flower belongs in a particular retail tier;
what the THC number is.
British Columbia has a long cannabis-growing reputation, but geographic origin is still only one part of the product story.
Indoor Describes the Environment
Indoor cultivation gives growers a high degree of control over light, temperature, humidity, airflow and other environmental conditions.
That control can support consistency, but indoor growing is not an automatic guarantee of premium flower.
Genetics, plant health, harvest timing, drying, curing and storage still matter.
Indoor also does not tell you which growing medium was used. An indoor crop might be hydroponic, soil-grown or use another substrate.
Outdoor Uses Natural Conditions
Outdoor cultivation uses natural sunlight and outdoor environmental conditions.
Weather, season, temperature, humidity and local climate play larger roles.
Outdoor does not mean careless or low quality.
It means the plant was cultivated outdoors.
The final result still depends on genetics, cultivation decisions, harvest timing and post-harvest handling.
Greenhouse Sits Between Fully Indoor and Fully Outdoor
Greenhouse cultivation uses a protected structure while still taking advantage of natural light.
Depending on the operation, growers may also use supplemental lighting or environmental controls.
That makes “greenhouse” a broad category rather than one exact recipe.
Like indoor and outdoor, the word does not determine quality on its own.
Hydroponic Describes How the Roots Are Fed
Hydroponic growing generally refers to cultivation where plant roots receive water and nutrients through a managed solution rather than relying on traditional field soil.
Hydro can be used indoors.
Hydro can also be used in greenhouse systems.
